When two Iowa women found out their town’s old post office was for sale, they made a bid on the property: $1. Believe it or not, they got it.
After a unanimous vote by the Perry School Board, the former US Post Office in Perry, Iowa is now on its way to becoming an events center, according to a report by WHO-TV. Jenny Eklund and Mary Rose Nichols are behind the effort.
“Every single one said “Yes we accept your dollar bid,” so we got the building for a dollar,” Eklund said, according to WHO. “Then we had to find a bank that believed in us and believed in our dream to create and that wasn’t easy to do.”
The entrepreneurs have taken advantage of the large windows upstairs and made an open elegant space. Some elements of the building were restored to their original form including the entry way and the postal clerk window.
Eklund said the large arched windows are “where the brides fall in love.”
Renamed “The La Poste,” the building now has wedding receptions, class reunions, meetings, parties, and other events booked.
