A Des Moines man died after he reportedly went on a shooting spree that ended when he was shot by police.

Steven Vogel, 38, allegedly fired shots at houses and at passing cars in a neighborhood in southern Des Moines on Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 2013.  WHO-TV reported police estimated 100 shots had been fired, and that seven homes and three vehicles were hit.  The driver of one of the victim vehicles had a graze wound to his head, which was considered non-life-threatening.

Vogel reportedly fired on officers when police arrived at his home. He was shot when officers returned fire.  Police said they found Vogel and two weapons near him when they eventually entered his home.

Vogel was taken to a Des Moines hospital where he later died.

Neighbors described Vogel as an eccentric guy who liked guns and liked to talk about his guns.

The officers who fired at Vogel were placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine in an officer-involved shooting.  One of the officers involved has been a Des Moines Police officer for a year, and the other is a 22-year veteran of the department.
