A local soldier is being honored in a special way. Corporal Bryant J. Luxmore, a Sherrard High School graduate was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2012. His memory will live on for people driving south of the Quad Cities.

Soon part of Illinois Route 17 will be renamed the Corporal Bryant J. Luxmore Memorial Highway.

"Our community has shown us so many times that they are not forgetting B.J. and that`s what we want more than anything is for him to always be remembered," said Jaimie Luxmore, B.J's wife.

B.J. says enlisted in the army in 2011 where he was assigned to an infantry division. A year later he was deployed to Afghanistan where he died from injuries when he encountered a small arms fire.

Brenda Luxmore, B.J's mom, says the new signs that will be posted on the highway will serve as a reminder for generations to come, while keeping his memory alive.

"We`re very grateful for all the different ways he`s been honored and each one represents part of his life and I think the road dedication it just brings him back home, this is home," Brenda said.

A highway dedication ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.
