Hy-Vee brand trail mixes recalled for possible health risk

A half-dozen trail mix products have been recalled from Hy-Vee because they pose a potential health risk.

The Hy-Vee brand trail mixes could be contaminated with Listeria, according to a statement from Hy-Vee.  The recalled products are:

  • Hy-Vee Caramel Cashew Honey Crunch Trail Mix — sold in 24 oz. bags with the UPC number 75450040586 and with a “best by” date of April 5, 2017
  • Hy-Vee Dark Chocolate Cranberry Trail Mix — sold in 24 oz. bags with the UPC number 75450041354 and with a “best by” date of April 14, 2017
  • Hy-Vee Mountain Trail Mix — sold in 26 oz. bags with the UPC number 75450016796 and with a “best by” date of April 5, 2017, and April 15, 2017
  • Hy-Vee Mountain Trail Mix To Go — sold in 1.75 oz. bags with the UPC number 75450040739 and with a “best by” date of March 23, 2017
  • Hy-Vee Berry Trail Mix — sold in 7 oz. bags with the UPC number 75450040593 and with a “best by” date of March 19, 2017
  • Hy-Vee Santa Fe Trail Mix — sold in 6.5 oz. bags with the UPC number 75450041101 and with a “best by” date of March 31, 2017

The sunflower kernels in the mix are the reason for the recall. Previously, Hy-Vee’s supplier, SunOpta, announced they were recalling the kernels because of the possible Listeria contamination.  That recall initially was limited to the Minnesota facility and has since been expanded.

The company said the recall was being made “out of an abundance of caution” and that no illnesses have been reported in connection with the trail mix.

If you have these products, you should throw them away or return them for a refund.

Any questions can be directed to the Hy-Vee Customer Care hotline at 1-800-772-4098.

Each year, an estimated 1,600 people get sick and 260 others die due to listeria infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms include fever, aches and sometimes gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea.
