The discovery of a human skull in eastern Illinois has caused investigators to search for other remains in the area.

According to a report by WGN, officials said that on Thursday, October 10, 2013 a skull was found in a creek in Will County. It is believed that the skull had been there “for some time and had been submerged,” but became exposed when the water level fell.

WGN reported that crews were on scene with cadaver dogs searching for other remains.

A forensic anthropologist will determine the age and gender. According to the report, the teeth are missing so they cannot use dental records.

A spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said the skull was found in an area where people “tend to dump garbage” and it is possible that the skull could have been used by a medical school. According to the report, authorities said they are treating the discovery seriously.
