Crews in Rock Island started the process of demolishing an apartment complex that has been standing for over 60 years.
On Wednesday, February 5, 2014 deconstruction began on Manor Homes, which is located at the corner of 9th Street and 26th Ave. The complex includes 102 units in 14 buildings on 4.34 acres of land.
The property will be redeveloped into a subdivision including 55 single-family homes and duplexes for rent. New city streets, street lights, sidewalks, water, sewer, gas and electric lines will be part of the development.
“The renovation of this building will improve the neighborhood,” said Susan Anderson, Director of Rock Island Housing Authority. “It’ll be better for the community. People that live here have relocated into other homes we think will be better for them. And also, this will be a great location for the new residents moving in.”
It was expected that the project would take about two years.
