Fire that started in a two-car garage damaged another half-dozen neighboring properties before it was finally put out.

The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2012 in the 900 block of South Ninth Street in Burlington, Iowa.  Firefighters said the two-car garage was engulfed in flames that destroyed the garage and the car inside.

The fire also damaged the rear of the house to which the garage belongs.  Damage to the house was estimated at $30,000 to the structure plus $20,000 to the contents.  Damage to the garage was estimated at $10,000 to the structure plus $7,000 to the contents, including a $6,000 car.

Investigators said early findings indicated “the fire may have started inside the car” parked inside the garage.

“All together there were six additional surrounding properties damaged by this garage fire,” said Fire Marshal Mark Crooks.  The properties were all insured.

A dozen Burlington firefighters worked the fire along with six off-duty firefighters called in and five firefighters from West Burlington.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury battling the blaze.
