A woman and her grandson were able to escape their Rock Island home after a fire in the basement.
The City of Rock Island Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Yerkey said crews were called to the house shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2013.
The homeowner and her grandson were in the basement when they heard a "popping" sound coming from the next room. They were able to get out of the home safely.
The fire marshal was the first on the scene, coming straight from an earlier fire on 30th Street near 7th Ave. in Rock Island.
Yerkey said there was heavy damage to the basement, and city inspectors would have to determine if the home was safe for the family to return.
The cause of the fire was unknown.
