Facebook’s Iowa center moves closer to completion

Construction on Facebook’s data center in Altoona, Iowa is right on track.

The social media giant announced in April 2013 they would build a 476,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Altoona. Facebook promised nearly $300 million would be invested in the project.

The facility will reportedly be fully powered by a wind energy project in nearby Wellsburg.

Construction was expected to create hundreds of construction jobs, and an average of more than 400 people were at work on the construction site each day according to Facebook officials.

The company announced it would create at least 31 new jobs that each paid more than $23 per hour at the new facility.

The only job Facebook listed as available at the center on April 2, 2014, was a position as an assistant facility manager.

In an April 1 update posted, appropriately, on a Facebook page dedicated to the Altoona Data Center, the company shared photos of the site including a peek at the interior of the building under construction.

The Altoona facility “will be part of the crucial infrastructure that allows us to bring Facebook to you every day,” according to a post on the facility’s Facebook page.

The facility was expected to open in 2014.
