Elementary students in Galesburg made a memorial for their classmate who suffered a fatal pit bull attack.
Nielson Elementary students and friends of Ryan Maxwell planted a Thornless Hawthorn outside of the boy’s classroom on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. In front of the tree a stone has been placed dedicated to Ryan.
The school plans on adding flowers to the memorial next week.
“Ryan meant a lot to the school and his friends,” said school secretary, Rhonda Callahan. “He had gone to our school since kindergarten and he had a lot of good friends at our school and was just a great kid.”
A formal dedication ceremony for the memorial tree will take place on Sunday, June 9, 2013.
