ROCK ISLAND, Illinois — The Boys and Girls Club of the Mississippi Valley held a fishing derby at the Rock Island Conservation Club on Big Island Saturday, Aug. 6.
The first annual Get hooked fishing derby brought hundreds of families out to the waters on Big Island Road. 1,000 tagged catfish were released into the waters for people to catch.
Prizes from gift cards to outdoor gear were up for grabs.
It's all a way to raise money for kids in the community.
"Everybody felt welcome to come. Everybody was excited to come. It's just a fun day and an inexpensive day for all to have family time and for a great cause," said Lara Hodge, event coordinator.
One lucky fisher was eligible to win a Honda SUV.
All proceeds directly support programs for the Boys and Girls Club of the Mississippi Valley. Youth members have been learning how to cast this past week at the clubs.
Participants were able to keep the catfish they caught.
