BUREAU COUNTY, Illinois — Crews are supervising the site of an Illinois River cleanup where approximately 25 gallons of waste oil spilled from a boat, the MV Cindy Erickson, on Monday, Feb. 1. According to a press release by the Bureau County Emergency Management Agency, the spill was reported around 7:30 p.m. Monday evening near Spring Valley.
A private cleanup crew had been hired by vessel owner Marquette Transportation. The private contractor, with help from the Peru Rescue Station, deployed hard booms. As of Tuesday, Feb. 2, cleanup efforts are still underway but the waste is considered to be contained.
