Original story published at 7:46 p.m., Thursday May 16- Interstate 80 traffic near Atkinson, Illinois was being re-routed after a tanker truck overturned.
The crash happened around 6 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013 on westbound I-80 at mile marker 29.
Illinois State Police said westbound traffic was being re-routed at the Annawan exit. Eastbound traffic was being re-routed at the Atkinson/Galva exit.
Witnesses said the tanker moved from the left lane to the right lane westbound and continued off the road to the shoulder and into the ditch.
The driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He faces charges for improper lane use, according to the Illinois State Police.
Fire Department hazardous material teams and a truck that can spray foam chemicals were sent from the Arsenal. Firefighters from several area departments, including Coal Valley, Port Byron and Silvis were also sent to help.
State police said there was a small chemical spill at the scene of the crash, but there was no public health risk due to the spill.The semi-truck tanker was containing Toluene.
I-80 remained closed at 8 a.m. and state police said it was expected to remain closed for most of the day.
