The Centennial Bridge will be closed for more than a month during a several-month-long construction project.
A spokesperson from the Bi-State Regional Commission said that from June to October 2014 crews will be making repairs on the Centennial Bridge, which includes transverse beam replacements.
The bridge will be completely closed for 35 days from July 28th – September 5th. At all other times during the several months of work traffic may be down to one lane in each direction.
“We’ve seen the experience of other communities that have had catastrophic bridge failures and so making sure that we’re doing the repairs in a timely fashion so that they’ll continue to carry the traffic that we have today and the future is very important,” McCullough said.
During the construction and closure times, drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, as more traffic consumes the I-74 and Government bridges. It was also recommended that travelers avoid driving during peak traffic times: 6:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
