Firefighters battled record-cold temperatures as they battled fire in a home in Davenport, Iowa.

The fire was reported just before 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2014, at a home in the 1200 block of Warren Street.

Firefighters reported seeing flames showing from the home's second floor when they arrived.

Moments later, they were asking for an ambulance because someone who lives in the house was reportedly hurt.  Initial reports indicated one person was taken, from the fire scene, by ambulance to a local hospital.  That person later said they declined to be taken to the hospital after escaping the burning home.

A woman who lives in the home said she recalled lighting a candle in her bedroom before she fell asleep, and then she awoke when her home was on fire.

She and her two dogs escaped the house.  She was uncertain about her pet cats.

Fire investigators later said two cats perished in the fire.

Damage was estimated at $80,000 to the structure plus $30,000 to the contents of the home.
