Burlington home fire destroyed by food left unattended

A house fire last night in Burlington has destroyed a home, says the Burlington Fire Department.

BURLINGTON,  Iowa — A house fire last night in Burlington has destroyed a home, says the Burlington Fire Department.

The fire started in the kitchen of a house in the 500 block of S. Fifth Street around 9:30 p.m. There was only one person home at the time and was able to get out safely. No injuries were reported.

It is thought to be that the fire started in the kitchen when food cooking was left unattended, and is considered accidental. Damages are estimated around $40,000 to the home and another $20,000 lost in property items.

Firefighters were on scene until 12:30 a.m.
