DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some senior residents at a Des Moines apartment complex have been trapped in the upper floors of the building for weeks because of a broken elevator.
Des Moines television station KCCI reports that the Jacobs Place building’s sole elevator broke down on Aug. 3, leaving some elderly residents who are physically unable to take the stairs without a way down — or back up.
The building’s management says it could take up to two months to fix the elevator. In the meantime, it says it’s offering short-term accommodations by installing chairlifts in the stairway and hiring assistants to walk dogs, pick up groceries and other tasks.
But some residents say that doesn’t make up for being trapped in their homes.
