The man who exchanged gunfire with a Maquoketa, Iowa police officer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
That’s the result of an autopsy performed on Aaron Edward Scott Wednesday, April 2, 2014 by Dr. Dennis Klein of the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office.
Sgt. Brendan Zeimet, a 13-year veteran of the Maquoketa Police Department, was shot in the arm when he and 30-year-old Aaron Edward Scott, of Wyoming, Iowa, were involved in a shootout just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, April 1. Ziemet had stopped to check on Scott’s parked pickup truck when Scott, armed with a rifle, got out of the truck and opened fire on Ziemet. Ziemet returned fire and Scott fled in his truck.
Ziemet was shot in the arm.
Other officers pursued Scott's truck but lost sight of in near Elwood in Clinton County.
About a half-hour after the shooting, Scott’s body was found in his overturned truck along 150th Avenue north of Highway 136 in Clinton County.
“Scott was shot one time in the leg by the officer. This injury was not life-threatening,” according to autopsy results released Thursday, April 3.
Klein determined the cause of Scott’s death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ziemet was in good condition and recovering from his injury. He was on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
