It’s that time of the week when we participate in “Throwback Thursday.” This week’s submissions have us look back to a time when Halloween masks were creepier than today, there was downtown shopping in Davenport, and when the “I-74 Bridge” ended in a set of toll booths. Enjoy!
First up, it’s 1910. This is the original JHC Peterson Sons store in the Redstone Building in downtown Davenport. The department store was built in 1892. In 1928 the Petersen’s store was consolidated into the Petersen-Harned-Von Maur Store and it ceased independent operations. The Redstone Building, however, would
continue to house the flagship downtown store until 1989. This building is in existence today, hosting the River Music Experience, Falbo Brothers Pizza, and Woodfire Grill.
Next up? 1926, Davenport Main and Third Street looking across the river to Illinois. Notice the trolley tracks right down the center of the thoroughfare.
Halloween is just 4 days away! This is how children in 1960 celebrated. Those hard, plastic masks that would steam over had cutting sharp edges.
This is what the I-74 bridge looked like 46 years ago. It’s 1970 and this “Greetings from the Quad Cities Postcard.” How would you like to stop on the bridge today and pay a toll? Notice the booths in the bottom right.
