Police say one person died after being involved in a crash caused by a street race.
Two vehicles were believed to have been racing each other westbound on West Kimberly Road in Davenport around 4:20 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2015, according to a statement from the Davenport Police Department.
The statement said that a Nissan Sentra was in the left lane and a Pontiac Grand Prix was in the right lane. Near the old K-Mart, both cars struck a Ford Edge that was turning east onto Kimberly Road out of a private business drive from the north side of the roadway.
According to the statement, two passengers and the driver in the Ford Edge were taken to the hospital for injuries. The woman who was riding in the back seat died at the hospital as a result of the crash, police said. Initially, it was indicated on scene that the driver of the Ford Edge was killed. As of Monday morning there was no word on the driver's condition, or the front seat passenger.
The driver of the Nissan and his passenger were taken to the hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries, according to police. The driver of the Pontiac Grand Prix, a 17-year-old, was uninjured, police said.
The police statement said that the 17-year-old driver has been charged with homicide by vehicle by reckless/drag racing, reckless driving, and drag racing. He was taken to the Scott County Juvenile Detention Center.
Charges were pending for the driver of the Nissan, police said.
Police were notifying family and not yet releasing the name of the passenger who died in the crash.
