Galesburg fire closes downtown traffic, cause being investigated

No injuries were reported and all people inside the building were able to safely escape, according to the fire department.

GALESBURG, Ill. — A downtown Galesburg building fire is being investigated by authorities, according to a press release. The fire caused some minor traffic disruptions for anyone in the area Monday morning.

Around 10:07 a.m., firefighters with the Galesburg Fire Department responded to 149 E. Main St. for a structure fire. Smoke could be seen coming out of a third-floor window. The building consists of two businesses on the main level and then has residential units on the second and third floors.

News 8 spoke with Galesburg Fire's Battalion Chief David Farrell who said no injuries were reported and all people inside the building were able to safely escape. According to a press release from the city, two cats were recovered and given to animal control. Before firefighters arrived on the scene, officials say a citizen helped a resident evacuate from the second floor.

Farrell said there was extensive damage on the third floor and that the cause remains under investigation. Damages are estimated at $160,000. Due to concerns over the structural integrity of the building, sidewalks surrounding it have been blocked off.

Around 10:30 a.m., city officials sent out a notice saying E. Main Street (US Hwy 150) was temporarily closed between Public Square and Seminary Street as crews battled the blaze. That closure was lifted roughly two hours later at 12:34 p.m.
