DAVENPORT, Iowa — In summer 2023, the City of Davenport wasn't in favor of making the one-way streets at Third Street and Fourth Street into two-way streets.
Just over a year later, on Thursday, June 27th, the Downtown Davenport Partnership held their annual meeting, where Executive Director Kyle Carter said the ball is finally rolling on the project.
“That’s been approved," Carter said.
Carter said that a piece of the project that is widely overlooked is the ability of the two-way streets to be used as a flood detour. Once the construction on the one-way streets is complete, the roads will be able to get commuters from Bettendorf to the west side of downtown Davenport, even during floods. The roads are made to withstand 21 feet of water.
Carter also said that the two-way roads will bring more car and pedestrian traffic to businesses and offices in that area but reiterated that the most important part of this project is how it will make commuting easier during floods.
“The one-way to two-way conversion is critical," he said.
You can expect to see construction in progress later in 2024, and the final project is expected to come together in 2025.
