'It's a sense of community' l DeWitt library welcomes romantic book club

The group takes a story related to the genre and opens up for discussion.

DEWITT, Iowa — A new spot may give area couples one unique way to freshen up their love circle.

DeWitt Community Library has launched an adult romance 'Literal Hotties' Book Club.

"It's a sense of community honestly," member and library employee Ashley Stafford said.

"It's a way to get to know people," member Linda Burmester said.

The group takes a story related to the genre and opens up for discussion.

“A big part of what I take away from romance novels is just like, 'it’s not the end of the world,'" organizer and library customer service and circulation manager Eden Johnson said. "Everything will be fine, I just need to talk it out.”

"It's nice because it's not just about the romance," Stafford said. "You're learning about this character development; you're learning how these characters become better people, and so you can become better as well."

Members will first read about a story from Lyssa Kay Adams called 'The Romance Book Club.' One of the main focuses of the plot is on the key of communication.

"It almost ruined their relationship," Stafford said. "I think it had a really good perspective of both sides of a relationship."

"There are other times a sentence may hit me to the point that it really makes me think about something," member Tami Finley.

Adults of all backgrounds are able to join in the dialogue and weigh their thoughts on how the story may apply to their lives.

"It's children, no children, married, not married," Burmester said. "It's a very diverse group."

"Just the communication thing, I have used that," Johnson said. "I should just say what I'm feeling. I'm upset about something, just say it, and it's worked."

Organizers said lessons may help any significant other or family and friends who are single.

"Coming to book club is making relationships, if it's not a romantic relationship," Johnson said.

The free book club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

"It's a great way to problem-solve without really overthinking things," Finley said.

DeWitt Community Library has five adult book clubs including the book stack chat social group, morning coffee, eclectics, fireside classics and literal hotties.
