Derecho blows through Iowa, Illinois Monday evening

The system produced at least three tornadoes, with wind speeds equivalent to that of a category two hurricane.

MOLINE, Ill. — Update on Tuesday, July 17: The National Weather Service has now confirmed five tornadoes during Monday's storms.

People across the Quad Cities region are picking up the pieces after what has been confirmed a derecho blew through the area Monday night. The system produced at least three tornadoes, with wind speeds equivalent to that of a category two hurricane. 

Over 60,000 people were without power. While that number has gone down, thousands still remain in the dark as of 8 p.m. Tuesday. 

Wind speeds exceeded 70 mph, with a significant amount of damage noted along Highway 20 and in the Cambridge/Kewanee area. Tornadoes were noted in the Quad Cities metro, Kewanee and Taylor Ridge near Andover. The highest amount of rainfall was about 2 to 3 inches in McDonough and Warren counties in Illinois.
