DAVENPORT, Iowa — A monument to veterans in the Quad Cities has received some new upgrades.
On Thursday, Nov. 2, the city of Davenport hosted a ribbon cutting for the latest addition to Veterans Memorial Park. The latest work added a Mississippi River overlook and native prairie grass to the park, which began development in 2010. Local veterans were grateful to the community for the way to honor their fellow soldiers.
"When a lot of Vietnam veterans came back, that was a different time in our country, and we were the bad guys fighting in the war representing our country. And so we didn't get a lot of things ... And so for us to see the Vietnam vets and other veterans recognized and honored here today, and to think this park is dedicated to them, it's really special," Bill Churchill, president of the Friends of Veterans Memorial Park said.
The additions marked the completion of phase two of the park's development. Phase three will include flagpoles and bricks that can be personalized to honor specific veterans.
