Davenport police have charged three people in connection in the Jan. 16 homicides of Brian Godwin and Amy Smith.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, Davenport police announced that 34-year-old Devon Braet and 27-year-old Adriana Blake have been charged with the following:

  • Two counts of first-degree murder
  • Second-degree arson
  • Two counts of abuse of a corpse
  • Going armed with intent
  • Unlawful use of a weapon
  • Two counts of assault while participating in a felony causing serious injury
  • Possession of a controlled substance

Both Braet and Blake had been previously arrested on unrelated charges.

In addition, 49-year-old Melisa M. Weber was arrested on Feb. 7 for aiding and abetting and charged with second-degree arson, two counts of abuse of a corpse and being an accessory after the fact.

The charges stem from an incident on Tuesday, Jan. 16, when first responders were dispatched to the 5200 block of North Division Street for a fire. After extinguishing the apartment fire, 44-year-old Brian L. Goodwin and 44-year-old Amy M. Smith were found dead inside. Police claim the suspects started the apartment fire to "mutilate the bodies of two separate victims by the use of fire in an attempt to conceal the crime of murder."

According to police call records, officers responded to the address just hours earlier at 11:46 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15 to a report of a violent domestic disturbance.
