Shootout with police leaves one Davenport man dead, 6 officers on leave

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Davenport man is dead after a police pursuit ended with a gunfight in Davenport on Sunday morning, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS). 

Around 2:50 a.m., law enforcement officials initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of 5200 Grand Avenue, but the driver didn't stop. 

A pursuit of the vehicle ended after the vehicle became inoperable near Kimberly Road and Elmore Avenue. 

The occupants of the vehicle exited their vehicle and fled on foot. 

One occupant of the vehicle exchanged fire with police officers, and was killed in the exchange.

On Sunday, the Iowa DPS identified the deceased man as 24-year-old Kenneth Jamel Carrol of Davenport.

Three Davenport police officers, two Iowa State troopers and one Bettendorf police officer discharged their weapons during the incident. All six have been placed on critical incident leave while the investigation ensues. 

No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. The names of officers involved has not yet been released.

It's not clear how many occupants were in the vehicle with Carrol.

Multiple officers from several agencies were involved.
