Davenport's New Arsenal Bridge roundabout opens, bridge entrance to follow soon

The new roundabout at the Arsenal Bridge in Davenport has opened, providing drivers a smooth transition onto the bridge, while the bridge entrance remains closed.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The new roundabout at the Arsenal Bridge in Davenport officially opened, though the entrance to the bridge itself will remain closed a bit longer. While the roundabout currently sees minimal traffic, officials anticipate a significant increase by next month.

Davenport Mayor Mike Matson shared that the bridge's closure offers drivers time to get accustomed to the new three-point turn system. He emphasized that the changes aim to make the transition onto and off the bridge smoother.

"This is a small piece to say, 'hey, we understand you're getting to and from, let's make that easier for you.' They agreed, and here we are," said Mayor Matson.

Colonel William 'Joe' Parker said, "We were able to take the stop signs out and really facilitate a safer flow of traffic for the workforce and the commuters who use that to get back and forth around the Quad Cities."

The bridge itself is expected to open to drivers in about three to four weeks. In the meantime, residents have expressed excitement about the new design, believing it enhances safety in the area.

"I think it's good for the flow of traffic. It lets everyone go through, and there are no stop signs or anything like that, so I think it's pretty good for traffic," Davenport resident Nick Hirst said.

Crews are wrapping up work on some mechanical issues on the bridge as they prepare for its public opening. Officials noted that plans were originally delayed due to recent river flooding. Mayor Matson also mentioned ongoing efforts to push for additional road infrastructure improvements around the city.
