Fire at Davenport apartment complex leaves several displaced

The Davenport Fire Department responded to a fire in the 1800 block of W 40th Street shortly after 9 on Wednesday night.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A fire at a Davenport apartment building Wednesday night has left several people displaced from their homes.

The Davenport Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of W 40th Street shortly after 9 p.m. Crews were able to put out the fire, but Chief Mike Carlsten said the third floor of the building did sustain water damage.

He told our News 8 crew on scene that several people were home during the time of the fire and several have been displaced from their homes. It's unknown at this time how many people are affected.

One person was transported to a local hospital, but their condition is also unknown at this time.

A neighbor from an apartment complex across the street told News 8 he heard a siren around 9:15 p.m. He looked outside and saw heavy flames coming out of an apartment.

Our News 8 crew saw firefighters carrying several cats out of apartment units. Staff with Medic EMS could be seen giving two other cats oxygen.

Carlsten said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

News 8 will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
