D-Day veteran celebrated at Rock Island Arsenal for First Army's birthday celebration

Minnesota native Dennis Boldt, who served with the First Army, got to use a sword to cut a birthday cake marking the occasion.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Rock Island Arsenal welcomed a WWII veteran to share his experience of serving in the war.

On Friday, Aug. 9, Dennis Boldt met with his fellow members of the First Army and took a tour of the Arsenal in a WWII Jeep. Boldt served with the First Army during their landing on Utah Beach in Normandy.

"It's just great to be here. I just cannot express my gratitude that has been bestowed on me for this occasion. It's like a homecoming, a true homecoming," Boldt said.

The celebration was all part of the First Army's 106th birthday celebration. At 99 years old, Boldt joked that's older than him. He even got to help cut the cake with a sword.
