Congressman Sorensen calls on President Biden to step down from 2024 race

One of the latest Congressional Democrats to voice concerns about President Biden's 2024 presidential campaign represents the Quad Cities.

MOLINE, Ill. — One of the latest Congressional Democrats to call for President Biden to end his 2024 presidential campaign represents the Quad Cities region.

In an interview with News 8 on Friday morning, Rep. Eric Sorensen called on Biden to step down. Sorensen joined fellow Democratic lawmakers in expressing their concern about Biden's age and ability to lead the nation.

"I believe it is not too late to make sure that we've got someone, the right person, who's not just capable of taking us through the next four years, but someone who can win against all of the threats against democracy," Sorensen said.

Sorensen said that the Democratic party needs a candidate who inspires voters.

"We need the next person to be able to give us that feeling that our best days are ahead. And right now, I think that's going to be someone different," Sorensen said.

Sorensen pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential replacement for Biden, while also stating that the upcoming 2024 Democratic Convention could help determine a replacement.

Sorensen released a statement on Thursday, July 11 after President Biden's primetime news conference. The statement reads:

President Joe Biden is a good man who has spent the bulk of his life in service to our country. His work has been devoted to growing the middle class and building opportunity for all people. In 2020, Joe Biden ran for President with the purpose of putting country over party. Today, I am asking him to do that again.

It is more important than ever that our neighbors have a candidate for President who will communicate a positive vision for every person in this country. Someone who can demonstrate the strength and wisdom needed to lead us through the worst storms. A leader who will stand up to the present threats against democracy.

Every day, I remain committed to the people of Central & Northwestern Illinois. I believe our best days are still ahead. And today, I am hopeful President Biden will step aside in his campaign for President.
