Multiple people were taken to the hospital after two cars collided in an intersection near Dixon, Iowa.

The crash happened at 60th Avenue and 295th Street on Monday, May 2, 2016 around 3:45 p.m. The vehicles involved were a Ford F250 with an empty horse trailer and a Ford Escort, according to a statement from Deputy N. Comer, with the Scott County Sheriff's Office.

The Ford F250, being driven by 79-year-old Joseph Staner, stopped at a stop sign at 295th Street and then proceeded eastbound through the intersection, said Comer's statement. The Ford Escort was heading southbound on 60th Avenue when the vehicles collided. The Escort made a 180-degree turn and landed in the southeast ditch.

Comer said that two passengers and the driver were able to get out of the Escort, but one passenger was trapped inside and had to be extricated.

Three occupants of the Escort needed treatment for non-life-threatening injuries; the one that had to be extricated from the vehicle was airlifted, the statement said.  Staner and his passenger were not injured.

Staner was cited for failure to yield, according to the statement.
