DAVENPORT, Iowa — The City of Davenport has ordered residents of a downtown apartment building to evacuate the building.
On Tuesday, March 26, Davenport city officials announced that residents of an apartment building located at 401 W. 4th St. were being told to vacate the premises. In a press release, officials wrote that the order was due to findings made by structural engineers with Shive-Hattery, but did not provide details on what exactly those engineers discovered.
On Wednesday, March 27, a city spokesperson told News 8 that the engineer's report recommended the immediate vacate order because of the conditions of a wooden wall believed to be a structural wall.
City notices posted on the building's entrances show that the building was inspected recently. The notice from a '2nd reinspection' posted March 14 lists several issues needing repair work, though the whole report cannot be read due to an informational card blocking the text.
In a separate posted notice, the City said those living in the condemned building can stay at the Relax Inn on 6310 N. Brady St. until the end of March at no cost, with proof of residency.
According to the press release, 18 units are being vacated. City officials said that residents impacted by the vacancy orders will receive assistance from the City of Davenport's Development and Neighborhood Services Department.
News 8 is working to get more answers on what kind of issues lead to the building being condemned. The City's Neighborhood Services Director Rich Oswald has agreed to answer News 8's questions on Wednesday, March 27.
