Petition for release denied for Chhabria Harris, woman charged with killing 2 people on I-74 pedestrian path

Chhabria Harris, 47, faces numerous charges after driving under the influence and killing two pedestrians on the new I-74 bridge back in 2022.

ROCK ISLAND COUNTY, Ill. — Chhabria Harris, 47, will remain in jail as she awaits trial for a 2022 accident that left two people dead, according to court documents. 

Back on May 22, 2022, Harris allegedly drove onto the newly opened I-74 path and struck three pedestrians at about 2 a.m. The crash resulted in the deaths of 21-year-old Ethan L. Gonzalez and 18-year-old Anthony M. Castaneda, both of Moline.

Harris filed a petition for release but that was denied by a Rock Island County judge on Tuesday, Oct. 24. The case has been continued until Nov. 8. 

Harris is remanded on no bond and faces charges in connection to the accident, including aggravated driving under the influence causing death, aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm, failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, aggravated reckless driving and reckless homicide.
