DAVENPORT, Iowa — It has been an emotional 24 hours for the Center for Active Seniors (CASI) in Davenport after its facility suffered a pipe burst, causing a significant amount of damage.
"Tens of thousands of gallons of water were just coming down through the ceiling," CEO Laura Kopp said when describing what she saw in the hallways. "There was debris everywhere and the water covered at least 50% of the facility. I was just horrified."
It took nearly 15 minutes for crews to be able to turn off the water. Once it was, Kopp and her team scrambled to minimize the damage.
"It ended up being a much larger incident than we first originally anticipated," Kopp added. "Those that were here, were able to be evacuated safely. Our team went around and tried to move as much as possible before the water was able to get to things."
On Thursday, it was about picking up the pieces and preparing for the worst. Kopp hopes the cost of the damage isn't significant for the organization, which just last year lost more than $200,000 of funding from Scott County.
"It's a little disheartening when you have something this catastrophic and this big...when your resources are already so limited," Kopp said. "These types of programs are critical in keeping people healthy, safe, engaged and helping them to age the best they can. We will do everything we can to come back stronger from this."
The organization is expecting to remain closed for another week as they continue cleaning up.
