HENDERSON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, Ill. — The identity and cause of death have been released in the case of a Burlington, Iowa 17-year-old who was hit and killed by a train back in February.
On the evening of Feb. 19, just east of Gulfport, Illinois in Henderson County, an Amtrak passenger train was traveling westbound when it struck 17-year-old Louis A. Trumbull. According to the Henderson County Coroner, Trumbull was wearing noise-canceling headphones while running west along the north side of the tracks and did not hear or see the approaching train. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Video from a camera mounted on the front of the train shows the warning horn was activated numerous times several hundred yards before Trumbull was struck, according to the coroner.
"At no time in the footage, does it appear the victim was aware of the oncoming train," a press release states. The death has been ruled accidental.
Trumbull had joined the Army and was set to go to basic training after graduating high school. The press release says he had been training to gain strength before entering the Army.
