Controlled fire grows out of control, 200 acres burnt in Burlington

A controlled fire south of Burlington grew out of control Thursday, burning approximately 200 acres.

BURLINGTON, Iowa — A controlled fire grew out of control in Burlington Thursday afternoon, leading to the destruction of 200 acres of woodland.

The controlled fire started on Saturday, Feb.24 in the 3000 block of Spring Lake Road. On Wednesday, Feb. 28, Burlington firefighters responded to a report that the fire had grown out of control at the 2000 block of Sullivan Slough Road. Responding firefighters found a large fire making its way through the woods in rural Burlington.

Firefighters cleared the scene just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

By Thursday morning, increased wind gusts had reignited the fire. To bring the fire under control, firefighters back-burned a 750-foot line in an effort to reduce the amount of fuel available to the main fire.

As of Friday, the fire has been contained. It is estimated that around 200 acres of land was burnt.

No civilian nor firefighter injuries were reported during the incident.
