Brush fire active in Wapello

Because several burning trees are inaccessible to fire equipment, fire officials said they expect the fire will burn for several days.

WAPELLO, Iowa — A brush fire in Wapello is expected to take several days to burn out, according to Wapello Fire and Rescue.

According to fire officials, the department was called to respond to a controlled burn that had grown out of control on the Iowa River Floodplain around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25. Crews found 40 acres of ground had been burned, with the fire spreading to timber land owned by the State of Iowa. Responding crews have been able to keep the fire from moving beyond the 120 acres of timber.

However, many dead trees continue to burn and are additionally surrounded by burnt vegetation. Many of these trees can't be accessed by fire equipment, and fire officials said the blaze may continue for several days as a result.
