Peyton Swallows was recognized as the Civilian First Responder Hero for her bravery when her mother was experiencing anaphylactic shock.

MOLINE, Ill — Back on Oct. 27, Black Hawk College recognized area first responders through its 2023 First Responder Awards. About 60 nominations were sent in by the community for this year's awards with four being selected to receive them.

The winners of those awards were released to the public earlier this week by the college.

  • First Responder Hero Award
    • Sgt. William Lind from the East Moline Police Department
      • Back on Oct. 24, 2022, Lind was critically injured in the line of duty while trying to arrest a suspect wanted on arson charges. After a long journey of healing, Lind has recovered from his injuries and returned to work on restricted duty. He was recognized for his "unwavering commitment to upholding the safety and security of the community," according to the college.
  • First Responder Agency of the Year Award
    • Moline Fire Department
      • Moline's fire department received the most nominations of any first responder agency for Black Hawk College's award. It was recognized for its dedication to the safety and well-being of the community.
  • Civilian First Responder Award
    • Peyton Sallows
      • At just seven years old, Peyton Sallows from Port Byron showed just how brave she was during a 911 call on Sept. 5, 2023. After her mom went into severe anaphylactic shock, Peyton's calm response and quick thinking helped save her mother's life. First responders were able to move in quickly and administer lifesaving procedures because of the action Peyton took.
  • Certificate of Appreciation
    • Michael Arp
      • Arp is a first responder with Genesis Ambulance Services and administered first aid in what would save Peyton's mom's life. The college recognized him for this, adding that his and Peyton's work shows the importance of the community and first responders working together during emergencies.

The award ceremony took place alongside Black Hawk College's annual First Responders Appreciation and Criminal Justice Career Exploration Day.
