DAVENPORT, Iowa — Every kid can use a helping hand every now and then, and students at two Davenport elementary schools got some extra help from the community.
On Oct. 12, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley hosted 'Big For a Day' events at Truman Elementary and Jefferson Elementary. Mentors from local businesses and community organizations visited students for a "power lunch" where each was paired with a student they could play games with and get to know.
"We know that there are a large number of students in our community, people in our community who could really benefit from an adult friend, somebody who can provide consistent support, just be another person that they can talk to outside of their family, qnd that's really what Big Brothers Big Sisters does," said Sarah Sparey with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Other Davenport students will have an opportunity to have a temporary mentor soon, as well. Additional 'Big For a Day' events will be hosted at McKinley Elementary and Wilson Elementary on Thursday, Oct. 26.
