BETTENDORF, Iowa — Two people have been arrested after fleeing a traffic stop Tuesday morning and damaging three Bettendorf Police cars, according to arrest records.
Around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, a patrol officer noticed a vehicle with a loud muffler and no visible registration plate driving along I-74 in Bettendorf. A traffic stop was initiated but the driver, Brianna Sand, 41, of Rock Island, failed to stop for police at first, according to the arrest affidavit. Eventually, she did pull over and police were able to put a tire deflator under the car.
While police were talking with Sand and her passenger, 39-year-old Larry Hines of Davenport, the arrest report says she sped away, running over the tire deflation device. From there, police pursued the vehicle along I-74, reaching a speed of 87 miles per hour in an attempt to catch up with Sand and Hines.
Police formed a blockade to stop the vehicle, according to the affidavit, where Sand then struck one of the patrol vehicles. She continued to try to avoid apprehension, striking two other patrol cars and a light post as a result. Damages for all three vehicles are estimated at over $10,000 plus $2,000 for the damaged pole.
Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested, according to officials. Sand faces numerous charges, including two counts of criminal mischief in the first degree (a class C felony), eluding (a class D felony) and assault on persons in certain occupations (a class D felony). Hines was also charged with providing false information to police for giving a fake name and possession in the third degree after police found numerous drugs with him.
