Car crashes into Bettendorf apartment after father-son drive turns physical

The son reportedly assaulted his father, the driver, causing him to lose control and crash into the apartment building.

BETTENDORF, Iowa — Update: The cause of a car crashing into an apartment building was found to be a physical altercation between a father and son, according to Bettendorf Public Information Officer Lauran Haldeman.

Officers responded to the incident Wednesday at 12:37 p.m. after receiving calls of a vehicle that drove into the north side of Williamsburg Apartments located at 2950 Hawthorne Drive.

The report says a witness saw the driver, a 72-year-old man from Clinton, Iowa, being assaulted by his son, 35-year-old Anton Kunavich, "for some time" while driving on city streets. The driver's name was not mentioned in the report.

As the vehicle, a grey 2009 Toyota Camry, approached Hawthorne Drive, the father drove into the parking lot of the apartment complex and was still getting assaulted. This caused him to accelerate and lose control of the car, crashing into a lower level apartment.

Anton was arrested on scene for assault with injury. He is currently being held in Scott County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

There were no occupants inside the apartment and no notable injuries, but the building suffered an initial $75,000 damage estimate.
