DAVENPORT, Iowa — The first Amazon facility in the Quad Cities is open for business.
The company's Davenport distribution center partially opened in October 2023, but on Thursday, March 28, the facility hosted a grand opening. Davenport Mayor Mike Matson, Senator Joni Ernst, and Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks all participated in tours of the center. The distribution center receives goods from manufacturers and sellers, which Amazon then packs up and ships out to customers. However, company officials said Quad City residents shouldn't expect to be getting their packages faster as a result.
"We don't have any immediate delivery happening from this facility. That would be a future add that we could potentially add to the process here at the facility, but not something that we do immediately through the launch process," Nate Rudy, the facility's general manager, said.
Rudy told News 8 that the facility is still looking to hire about 300 more workers to supplement the 2,000 employees that currently work there. The distribution center ships approximately 1 million products per week, and during the peak holiday shopping season, company officials said the center could ship as many as 3.1 million products weekly.
