Man killed in shooting with police in Idaho after stabbing 2 K9 dogs

A 37-year-old man was shot by law enforcement members after he stabbed two K9 dogs during an incident Wednesday morning, the Ada County Sheriff's Office said.

BOISE, Idaho — A 37-year-old man was shot and killed by law enforcement members after he reportedly stabbed two K9 dogs during an incident early Wednesday morning, according to the Ada County Sheriff's Office

Officials said four Ada County deputies and one Boise Police officer fired at the man after he injured the K9s and multiple attempts to get him to comply with demands. The situation started in a neighborhood at Cole Road and Amity Road at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The man was later identified as Jeremiah Gaver of Boise. According to the Ada County Coroner's Office, he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise after unsuccessful lifesaving measures.

Gaver was seen on South Maverick Way looking over fences into backyards while covered in a tarp. The sheriff's office said a deputy on patrol was unable to get him to say what he was doing or his name, and he kept his hand underneath the tarp.

The man was given a final warning to comply at 1 a.m. after "numerous" attempts from more Ada County deputies and Boise Police officers that arrived on scene, according to ACSO's news release.

A bean bag round was eventually fired and a K9 dog was sent at Gaver, but the less-lethal rifle did not stop him. Police said he then stabbed the K9 and ran east towards a field, leading law enforcement to follow.

Gaver was seen holding a knife as he stopped for a minute, but reportedly ignored demands to drop the weapon, and a foot chase occurred.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office said a second confrontation happened after the Boise man ran to the east side of Cole and Amity in the direction of a gas station. Both agencies deployed tasers, which eventually caused Gaver to fall over.

A second K9 with Boise Police was sent toward the suspect, and he stabbed the dog "multiple times," according to police. The dogs were "badly injured" and are receiving emergency medical care.

Following the second stabbing, police said Gaver turned toward law enforcement, and shots were fired by the four ACSO deputies and one police officer.

As part of standard practice, all five law enforcement members involved have been placed on administrative leave and the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force is investigating, led by the Meridian Police Department.

Officials said the neighborhood at Cole and Amity roads will remain active Wednesday as the investigation is ongoing and there are multiple crime scenes.

The Idaho Police Canine Association posted on social media that the two K9s involved were named Astrid with ACSO and Meko with BPD.

A spokesman with Boise said all of Meko's medical expenses are being covered by the city, and they are not actively seeking donations for their care.
