Clinton County crash kills woman

The Clinton County Sheriff's Office says that a driver hit a deer on Highway 61 before being struck by another vehicle, killing the first driver.

WELTON, Iowa — One woman is dead after a two-vehicle accident in Clinton County on Friday night.

On Nov. 17 shortly before 5:30 p.m., deputies with the Clinton County Sheriff's Office were called to the 1600 block of Highway 61, north of Welton, after receiving reports of a crash.

Law enforcement officials said that one vehicle was driving southbound and hit a deer, stopping the vehicle. The driver exited their car as a result of the accident. While the vehicle was stopped, another southbound vehicle struck it, killing the driver who was involved in the deer accident.

The driver who passed away was identified by the Iowa State Police on Saturday as Cheryl M. Neilson, 68, of Delmar, Iowa. 

Another woman, Amber Edens, 18, of Dubuque, was transported to Genesis East Hospital in Davenport.

The accident is still under further investigation.
