Illinois surpasses 10,000 deaths due to COVID-19

Public health officials have reported an additional 9.9k cases in the last 24 hours.

The State of Illinois has surpassed a total of 10,000 deaths related to COVID-19, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

On Thursday, November 5, health officials reported 9,935 new cases for a total of 447,491 cases in Illinois. Officials reported an additional 97 deaths, for a total of 10,030.

They also reported 3,891 people hospitalized overnight with COVID-19.

"We have more than doubled the number of people in our hospital system in just about five weeks with no sign of slowing," said Governor J.B. Pritzker in his daily briefing Thursday.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased from an average of 2,700 to an average of 3,400 over the last week. The test positivity average also climbed over the last week, from 8.2% to 10.5%.  Test positivity rates are how the state determines whether regions need to operate under resurgence mitigations. 

Region 1 and Region 2 encompass parts of the Quad Cities and surrounding areas.

Tests continue to be available for all Illinois residents.  The state has administered more than 8 million tests, with an average of 82,000 tests per day.
