ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Rock Island-Milan School District board approved Dr. Sharon Williams as its superintendent Friday, making her the district's first female superintendent.
After an extensive search, Williams was selected for her more than two decades of experience as a teacher, school leader and district administrator.
“Dr. Williams’s credentials and vision align seamlessly with our commitment to the future of our district," Terrell Williams, president of the school board said in a press release. "The board is confident that Dr. Sharon Williams is the ideal candidate to lead us into a promising future.”
The Nashville, Tennessee native earned her Doctorate of Education from Tennessee State University and her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching from the University of Memphis. She most recently served as deputy superintendent of Proviso Township High School District in Cook County.
Williams said the district demonstrated its passion and school pride throughout the superintendent selection process.
"A compelling vision of equity and the diverse student body and Board of Education drew me to the superintendent position in the Rock Island-Milan School District," Williams said in a press release. "Rock Island is poised and ready to act on the Board of Education’s Equity Statement to ensure that all scholars are prepared once they leave Rock Island High School."
Williams will begin her three-year contract as superintendent on July 1.
