MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Students in Muscatine, Iowa take a deep dive into their history by cracking open a time capsule that used to be under an old elementary school.
The new Jefferson Elementary just opened up, so Tuesday's time capsule event was another step in breaking the new place in by breaking a piece of the old Jefferson Elementary open.
The capsule sat underneath the old building since 1927, and on Tuesday, inside the new building, they opened the capsule up for the first time to see what was inside. Students, staff and district leaders waited with anticipation for what they were able to find, and the discoveries didn't disappoint.
They found a bible, an old school district directory, a yearbook and even newspapers from the day it went underground. It's a big moment for the district as they look forward to the future by looking into the past.
"As we read through the headlines of the papers, it's neat to see and learn about the history of our community and as a district. It's also interesting to look back and see some of the same issues that they're dealing with in 1927 are some of the same issues we deal with today," Jefferson Elementary School Principal Corry Spies said.
The pieces taken from the capsule will be displayed at the main district offices before getting returned to Jefferson Elementary where they'll be put on permanent display.
