AMES, Iowa — The air conditioning system at Iowa State University is back up and running after a brief outage following a fire at the university's power plant.
"Crews were able to make repairs sooner than expected based on initial estimates," the school said in a press release.
The news comes less than a day after the university moved classes online for the remainder of Thursday and Friday while the cooling system was "experiencing disruptions" across campus, according to a news release. University officials also urged students who were able to go home for the weekend to leave campus.
Despite the cooling system being restored, the school says Friday classes will remain virtual or canceled as buildings return to regular temperatures. Most academic buildings will remain locked on Friday.
Campus services, including the Memorial Union, Thielen Student Health Center and more, all have regular operating hours unless noted. Check for potential schedule changes here.
Facilities crews will continue to make repairs into Friday.
Of the halls and apartments available through ISU's Department of Residence, 13 of the 23 buildings are always without A/C.
"About one-third of our population that we have on campus are in non-air conditioned buildings," Virginia Speight, the university's Residence Life Director, told Local 5 earlier this week.
