A bill aimed at helping colleges prevent and address sexual assaults is heading back to the Illinois State House.
House Bill 821 passed unanimously Thursday, May 28, 2015 in the Illinois Senate, according to a statement from Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
In addition to giving students and employees extra training to prevent sexual assaults, the bill, if approved and enacted, would make sure state universities and colleges would "develop a clear, comprehensive campus sexual violence policy." This would outline how incidents would be reported and how the school would respond.
The bill would also make sure schools notify victims of their rights and tell them what protections the school can provide for them, whether that be getting an order of protection, changing their schedule, offering counselling services, etc.
Student victims would also be given a confidential adviser that would help them understand what actions they can take to report the crime and seek medical assistance.
